Tadalafil is part of a class of medications known as PDE5 (phosphodiesterase type 5) inhibitors that are used to treat erectile dysfunction. Tadalafil dilates blood vessels that feed the penis to allow the penis to adequately fill. Adequate blood fill is required to obtain or maintain erection suitable for sexual intercourse.

Tadalafil use is considered safe for most men; however, in certain situations Tadalafil may not be the best treatment option. Combining Tadalafil use with medications or illegal drugs that contain nitrates (even if taken occasionally) may cause dangerous drops in blood. Your physician may prescribe a lower dose or choose a different treatment option for you if you are taking medications for high blood pressure or to prevent clots or if you have decreased kidney or liver function. Tadalafil should only be used by men with diagnosed erectile dysfunction.

The side effects of Tadalafil are generally mild and were well tolerated; however, some people have experienced serious sight and vision changes or complications while on PDE5 inhibitors, including Tadalafil. Seek emergency medical treatment if you develop double vision, a bluish tint to your vision that does not go away, ringing in the ears, or a sudden, marked decrease in visual acuity. Contact emergency services if you experience any allergic reaction symptoms that may include: tingling of the lips and face, swelling of the face or throat, and difficulty breathing. In rare circumstances, men may develop painful or prolonged erections that require medical treatment to prevent long-term damage. Notify your physician if you experience an erection lasting longer than four hours. The most common side effects of Tadalafil treatment are headache, dizziness, redness of the face, excessive nasal discharge, and flu-like symptoms. Report any side effect that becomes bothersome to your physician.

Tadalafil was approved by the FDA in January 2008 for daily low dose therapy. Lower doses (2.5mg – 5mg) are used for daily therapy. Occasional doses may be 2.5, 5, 10 or 20mg. Daily doses of Tadalafil should be taken around the same time of day, each day, without regard to meals or sexual activity. Occasional dosing of Tadalafil requires that the medication be taken at least 30 minutes (but up to 36 hours) prior to sexual activity to allow time for the medication to be absorbed. Regardless of dose, Tadalafil should not be taken more often than once daily.
