Indications
Fluticasone/Salmeterol is decreases the frequency and severity of asthma attacks and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) symptoms by a combination of the fluticasone’s anti-inflammatory properties and salmeterol’s relaxation of constricted airways.
Contraindications
Fluticasone/Salmeterol is not a rescue inhaler and should not be used in cases of acute asthma attack. Those who have experienced sensitivity to corticosteroids or any other component of Fluticasone/Salmeterol should avoid using this medication. Those with active infections, diabetes, glaucoma, cardiovascular disease, hyperthyroidism, or immunosupression (due to illness or medication) should be monitored closely for worsening of underlying conditions and for increased adverse affects. Fluticasone/Salmeterol may not be the best treatment option for those who are pregnant or nursing and children under the age of six as safety in these patients has not been established.
Side Effects/Adverse Reactions
Fluticasone/Salmeterol use may cause headache, depression, fatigue, insomnia, restlessness, throat irritation, nasal congestion, cough, wheeze, dry mouth, oral infections, nausea, trembling, heart palpitations, and flu-like symptoms. In children, fluticasone has been known to cause to cause adrenal suppression and decreased growth and development. Consult your physician with any concerns you have about the development of your child. Even though Fluticasone/Salmeterol decreases the incidence and severity of asthma attacks, attacks may still occur. Use your rescue inhaler if you develop severe wheezing or shortness of breath. If asthmatic symptoms worsen over the course of treatment with Advair consult your physician. If you develop white patches in the mouth, bleeding gums, frequent bloody noses or a persistent headache, notify your physician as these are signs of possible infections that may require additional treatment.
Dosage
Fluticasone/Salmeterol is dosed per each drug. Salmeterol dosing is 50mcg per an inhalation. Fluticasone dosing can be 100, 250 or 500mcg per an inhalation. Typical dosage for COPD with chronic bronchitis is one inhalation of 250/50mcg Fluticasone/Salmeterol twice daily. The starting dosage for asthma is one inhalation of 100/50mcg Fluticasone/Salmeterol twice daily. Your physician may increase your inhalation dosage if initial treatment dose appears ineffectual. Make sure to take Fluticasone/Salmeterol as prescribed. Do not stop Fluticasone/Salmeterol without consulting your physician even if you do not feel any benefit from initial Fluticasone/Salmeterol treatment. It may take longer than a week for you to start seeing results. You may not taste or feel the Fluticasone/Salmeterol release from the discus – do not take another dose. Often people report being unable to tell if they received their dose, normally they have received it. Taking another dose may result in overdose, chest pain, and rapid heartbeat.
