Indications
Indications: Azelastine Hcl is manufactured by German Remedies and marketed as Astelin in the U.S. Azelastine is an antihistamine nasal spray that works to block histamine from causing runny nose, itchy/watery eyes, and sneezing; in response to allergens.
Contraindications
Contraindications: Avoid drinking alcohol or combining Azelastine use with narcotic pain medicine, other allergy or cold medicine, muscle relaxers, seizure medication, or anti-depressants as these mixtures can lead to severe drowsiness. Do not perform activities that require fast reflexes or that could become dangerous if you fall asleep while doing them (such as driving) until you know how Astelin will affect you. Azelastine could be potentially harmful when taken during pregnancy. Speak with your doctor about Azelastine use during pregnancy. It is unknown whether Azelastine may harm a nursing infant; however, it is recommended that you not breast feed while on Azelastine. Azelastine should not be taken by children under the age of 6.
Side Effects/Adverse Reactions
Even though Azelastine is a nasal spray, it has systemic effects. This means that like all medications, Azelastine has possible side effects including: drowsiness, headache, dry mouth, irritation of the nasal passages, weight gain, nausea, nosebleed, and flu-like symptoms. Contact emergency services if you appear to be suffering an allergic reaction to Azelastine (signs include hives, swelling of the face or lips, and difficulty breathing). Seek immediate medical help if you develop bronchospasms (asthma like symptoms) or a racing pulse.
Dosage
The typical dose for Azelastine is one or two sprays, twice a day. Before taking Azelastine you gently blow your nose to attempt to allow the medication free passage.
