Brand Name: Atarax/Vistaril Generic Name: Hydroxyzine Hydrochloride

Indications: Hydroxyzine hydrochloride, marketed as Atarax or Vistaril, is used to treat a variety of nerve related conditions including: anxiety, itching due to allergic reaction or dermatitis, and motion sickness. Atarax/Vistaril can also be used to aid in sedation before and after general anesthesia and for increasing the effects of pain medications. Atarax/Vistaril is actually an antihistamine that affects certain receptors in the brain causing a central nervous system reaction.

Contraindications: Do not take Atarax/Vistaril if you are taking sodium oxybate (GHB) or if you are in your first 3 months of pregnancy. Drinking alcohol while on Atarax/Vistaril may increase sedation. Make sure your physician knows your entire medical history, including any medications you may take, prior to prescribing Atarax/Vistaril as some medical conditions or medications may require a dosage adjustment.

Side Effects: Atarax/Vistaril has very few known side effects. Drowsiness and dry mouth are the most commonly reported side effects. Drowsiness is usually temporary and goes away after the first two days of treatment. Drowsiness can be increased by the use of other medications (especially those for pain, insomnia, or agitation). Rarely, Atarax/Vistaril may cause un-purposeful movements, tremors, or convulsions. If you experience one of these reactions contact emergency services. If you experience chest pain, weak or slow pulse, severe muscle weakness, unusual swelling in your hands or feet or loss of consciousness – seek immediate emergency medical services. Rarely, allergic reaction may occur to Atacand. If you experience swelling of the face or throat, or difficulty breathing seek emergency medical help.

Dosage: Dosages vary and may be adjusted according to symptom response. Usually, Atarax/Vistaril is given throughout the day in three or four doses. Atarax/Vistaril may be taken with or without food.
