Indications
Naproxen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that is used to treat chronic and acute pain (particularly joint pain associated with osteoarthritis). Naproxen may be used to treat the pain associated with acute and chronic rheumatoid arthritis, dysmenorrheal (menstrual cramps), ankylosing spondylitis, osteoarthritis, gout, SLE, Paget’s disease, and Bartter’s syndrome.
Naproxen is propionic acid derivative that has NSAID properties similar to those of other propionic acid derivatives, (e.g., ibuprofen, fenoprofen, ketoprofen). Naproxen’s mechanism of action thought to be related to inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis by inhibiting COX-1 and COX-2 isoenzymes.

Side Effects/Adverse Reactions
Naproxen use may cause headache, drowsiness, dizziness, lightheadedness, depression, palpitation, dyspnea, peripheral edema, congestive heart failure, tachycardia, blurred vision, hearing loss, anorexia, heartburn, indigestion, nausea, vomiting, thirst, gastrointestinal bleeding, blood cell abnormalities (including thrombocytopenia, leucopenia, eosinophilia, and agranulocytosis), rash, itchiness, and pulmonary edema.
If you experience difficulty breathing or sudden, severe abdominal or flank pain – seek immediate medical attention.
Contact your physician if you develop unusual bleeding, bloody urine or stools, dark/tarry stools, or vomiting of bloody or coffee-ground emesis.
Dosage
Typically Naproxen is given in dosages of 250 to 500mg, twice daily. Do not exceed 1000mg, daily.
Naproxen should be taken with food (or antacid if prescribed).
